B.E. COLLEGE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION-WASHINGTON METROPOLITAN AREA (BECAA-WMA) held a meeting on 12th. November,2006 at Mr. Syama Chaudhuri's residence :   168 Westway, Apt. 201, Greenbelt, MD 20770

Highlights of the meeting :

  1. The minutes of the last meeting was read and confirmed save and except the changes that taken place since the last meeting held.
  2. The meeting then was called in order and the discussion taken place per agenda item circulated in advance.
  3. The event ‘Bijoya Sammilani’ held on 11/04/06 at Potomac Community Centre was discussed in detail. Sanjoy Basu , placed the receipt – expenditure statement of the program.
    Expenses - $ 698.19
    Collection – 730.00
    He also appraised the membership collection which stands in the tune of $780.00 He informed that the he is in the process of compiling the list of members who have not yet paid the membership for the year 2006-2007 and on finalization the same will be forwarded to all members for information.
  4. The meeting noted with thanks the gestures of some members who have volunteered to donate the expenses they made in preparing foods and purchasing gift items. Sanjoy Basu has taken the responsibility of sending them a ‘Thank You’ note on behalf of Board.
  5. Prabal Bandopadhya , treasurer of the BOG , introduced some adjustment in the Treasurer Report submitted in General Body by incorporating expenses as under ,
    $ 156.00 – Expenses for plaque towards Young Faculty award.
    $ 180.00 – Expenses incurred for making posters for YFRA.
    The cash-in-hand following this modification stands to the tune of $1050.00.It has been decided to post the Treasurer Report on website in due course.
  6. A detail discussion took place on Young faculty Research Award for the year 2006 and following action item was suggested,

    - Asim Mandal, who will be in India during Nov-Dec 2006, will represent BECAA_WMA in the formal handing over ceremony.
    - Tapas Som will prepare the check equivalent Indian Rs. 1,00,000.00 through Sanskriti and hand over to Asim Mondal.
    - Sanjoy Basu will initiate appropriate action to prepare the plaque and citation in line with what we presented last time.
    - Asim Mondal will confirm his availability during November & December 2006 so that a date for the ceremony can be finalized.
  7. Separate discussion took place for future ‘Young Faculty Research Award ‘and members opined that serious effort should be initiated to raise funds for sustenance of the award in the future days. Few members suggested that a pledge dinner may be organized to raise funds for the program. Finally, the agenda has been kept in abeyance for the next year BOG. Prabal Bandopadhya and Sanjoy Basu have been assigned the task of calling members and make them aware of the YFRA award.
  8. The ensuing election for BOG has been discussed, it is noted the last date of nomination is November 20, 2006 .Member suggested to have uniform representation of age group , gender and discipline in the Board. In case of inadequate nomination, we may have to extend the last date of filing (per constitution, the number in BOG should be between 7-12).
The meeting ended with thanks to Syama Chowdhury for providing sumptuous lunch.

This will be colorful evening with songs, flute, dance, concert and spirited conversation on B.E.College Alumni Association Washington D.C Chapter. Highlights of the evening :

BECAA-WMA organized a reception for Dr. Amitabha Ghosh at Tapas Som's residence on the evening of July 16 while Dr. Ghosh, BE College Alumni 1962 ME and past Director of IIT Kharagpur, was visiting Washington DC July 16 thru July 18. All members and their families were cordially invited to join for fun, food and good old BE College style adda while witnessing the presentation of a recognition plaque to Dr. Ghosh for his oustanding contribution and accomplishment in the field of engineering by his classmate and BECAA-WMA President Mr. Asim Mandal.

B.E. COLLEGE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION- WASHINGTON METROPOLITAN AREA (BECAA-WMA)celebrated Annual Picnic on 10th. June,2006 at SENECA CREEK STATE PARK, MD


BE College annual picnic - 2006 was a great success! Everybody kicked off with chaa-jhaalmuri prepared on the spot! Attendants were cooled off with ice-cold drinks and the shade provided by the picnic hut. Seneca Creek Park was a great place to have the picnic. Children played on a wonderful playground and many went through a trail and visited the creek. Later people enjoyed a well-cooked lunch with some of the finest foods. Many helped themselves to all they could. We are all looking forward for the next gathering.

Highlights of the meeting :

  • The draft minutes of 4/22/06 meeting held at Shyama Chaudhuri’s house was read and was confirmed by the board members present.
  • The reception dinner proposal for Dr. Amitabha Ghosh on July 16th arranged by Tapas was discussed and appreciated. Sanjoy showed the plaque to be presented to Dr. Ghosh in the reception.
  • Tapas informed that a committee for review of applications have been formed and proposed that we endorse their recommendation for the young faculty award. Board agreed.
  • Dr. Biswanath Datta’s visit to Wash DC, communicated by Subinoy Majumdar, for accommodation and hospitality was discussed. Since the notice was short no volunteer was readily available.
  • Sanjoy presented the expenses for the picnic which had a deficit of approx. $100 and proposed that we make that up with available cash balance. Board endorsed.
  • Sanjoy also proposed that we book the Potomac Civic Center for Bijoya Sammelani and agreed to follow-up.
  • The next meeting was proposed be held at Asim Mandal’s house on September 9th at 11am.
The meeting ended around 1pm with vote of thanks to Chitta and Banhishikha Naskar who hosted the meeting and was followed by lunch.
